My conversation partner is awesome! We started out meeting at the bus stop number 2 across from the FSU Student Union on Sunday... which I had no idea where that was in the first place so that made for an awkward location to join up, but it turned out to work well. My partner is from Bangkok, Thailand.. a place that I lived a summer ago for 4 months so we definitely had common ground and a good ice breaker.
Initially, we had intended to go grab coffee at the Starbucks on campus but apparently it was closed. So after a brief discussion as to where to go, I asked him if he liked Moe's or burrito's and he had never heard of either. This in itself, was a travesty and something that needed to be changed. So we jumped in my car and headed to Moe's for a glorious homewrecker burrito. His English overall was pretty good but, as he made me aware, his listening skills needs work. After finding out he had never had any sort of Mexican food so I got kind of energetic and excited and began speaking too fast. After slowing it down, we entered into the life changing realm of Moe's.
Next comes the order. We must have stood in front of the Moe's menu for a good 5 minutes in attempts to go through what each option was and what to get. Finally, he decided on a burrito and instructed the burrito-man of such. After getting our orders we finally sat down and he merely looked at the burrito in a puzzled state. It took a good explanation of how to attack the massive great structure, and then it was done. Game over. Thai Guy 1 - Burrito 0.
Overall, I had a fun time talking with my new found friend from Thailand and getting to share some of my favorite things in the US with him. Although, and you might find this hard to believe, some might not share my same enthusiasm about burrito's... I think we found a new believer. "Life is burritoful"!
It sounds like you guys had a great time together. The original meeting location was interesting maybe he is just used to riding the bus? I would recommend going to a real mexican place to see if he enjoys that. What is your Thai friend's name?
