Jackie TP11

For my last two tutoring hours, I worked with Sugia from the Leon County Literacy Volunteer program. Unfortunately, Sugia and I have opposite schedules, so we would only be able to meet up every once in awhile. So, we went over the homework/worksheets I provided for her in case we hadn't been able to meet the week before. She had gotten so much right, it almost confused me--her level seems apparent, then she shocks me with her knowledge. Though, she did have a lot of time and possibly resources to use in her homework. So, we covered articles, prepositions, and other grammar worksheets we had discussed before. Then, in accordance with this particularly rainy, stormy day, we did a weather-related lesson. First, we talked a lot about how weather is in Korea and how it is different from Tallahassee. Sugia had many questions about weather disasters here in America and how she should deal with them. We talked about tornados and hurricanes, where she should go in her house when a warning happens, and how they might effect her home. She had a lot of questions about insurance, and presumed the government would rebuild her house if it was ruined. Of course, I told her no, that it would have to be privately rebuilt, probably from insurance money/homeowner's insurance. She seemed so worried--but I assured her that her landlord took care of this, and she felt better about it. So, after our warm-up, I had Sugia write five sentences that dealed with complex sentences. I taught her a little about clauses, and building sentences that would be much more detailed, and told her to talk about the weather. She wrote these sentences, and then I helped her use coordinating conjunctions where she didn't correctly connect clauses. After correcting and working with her sentences, we took a small break.

  1. I know scheduling has been one of biggest struggles--mainly that mine and the person I'm tutoring's conflict. I'm glad you have been able to make it work (even if it's not perfect)~it's also great when your lesson can correspond with the weather (rainstorms are actually pretty predictable here in the summer!). :)
