Francisco TP-3

I met Aruem last Thursday on June 2nd. I asked her if there was anything that she needed help on or any homework that we could go over together. She pulled out a paper with some words that she jotted down during a class activity. The vocabulary contained words such as "hang up," "hang on," and "Mogul." I had difficulty explaining to Areum what "hang on" meant considering it has many contexts depending on how the word is used. I began telling her that it can mean for someone to "hang on" or to wait a little longer. I gave the scenario that if Areum and I were getting ready to go to dinner and I am not ready yet, I would use the expression "hang on." Areum understood this context clearly. She then found the passage that contained the expression "hang on" and I noticed that the expression was being used as something "hanging on" to something, such as a monkey hanging onto a tree branch. Areum also grasped this context and I explained to her that many expressions can have different meanings, it is how the expression is used in the sentence that determines its meaning. Areum laughed but I could tell it was an uncomfortable laugh do to her being confused. I assured her that it takes time and practice that will eventually make her a fluent speaker. For the next word, "mogul," I sat quietly and asked Areum what she thinks it means. She did not have the slightest clue so I told her to use the context clues around the word to try and determine the meaning of it (the word pertained to a sentence that described a business mogul who owns a stadium). Once she carefully looked at the sentence, she noticed words such as "business," and multi-millionaire. Areum assumed it must mean "powerful." I congratulated her and told her that its not so difficult after all. For the remainder of the tutoring session, Areum and I looked at some questions she got wrong in a comprehension quiz for reading. We went over each of the questions and I made sure Areum understood why the correct answer is the correct one.
