This week Jae and I met up with some of my friends whose parents are Korean and we all went to a local (the only local) Korean restaurant here in Tallahassee. I tried Korean food for the first time I few months ago in NYC and loved it, so I was pretty excited to try it again here in town.
The food was awesome again =) What was cool about this experience though was that I had the opportunity to share it with a native from Korean and two American who grew up with the cultural knowledge of living here but visiting Korean frequently. I was able to ask tons of questions about preparation, how the food compares to authentic Korean dishes, and how popular each item was or still is today. I was slightly worried however because I ate a whole dish comprised solely of bean sprouts, only to come home and read the news that bean sprouts are allegedly armed with e. coli in Europe right now. Ooops. Oh well. I seem fine =)
The experience was really great. I'm glad I was hopefully able to help her have a piece of home for the evening, I know missing food from one's home country can be one of the biggest homesickness feelings when abroad. I'm looking forward to hanging out with Jae the rest of summer and hopefully providing many more opportunities for her to try the somewhat diverse cuisine available in the area =)
Finally I find out of a Korean restaurant here in Tallahassee! My conversation partner, SungJin, is also Korean and I am always inquiring about Korean food. I might just have to take him here and see if he thinks it is authentic!
