I think me and my conversation partners have seriously made a dent in the CIES snack budget because of our excessive chocolate/vanilla cookie obsession and absolute “scarfing.” We always end up talking about idioms and colloquial expressions about food when sitting in CIES chatting. The girls were grilling me about my personal life, and of course I about theirs, especially as we get closer. I love having my group of conversation partners because I really just feel like they are my close friends now who meet up with me on a weekly basis! We talked about how dating in Korea isn’t appropriate with anyone that isn’t your own age. This sort of went with the conversation about ‘friends’ versus ‘siblings,’ but seemed more understandable in an American mindset. It’s funny, though, to think that our mindset is completely different than other countries that have much older people marrying young. We, of course, have this in America, but it does seem to be socially awkward or inappropriate, at least often to a protective father? We also talked a lot about my new job, and that Jia wanted a job. I told her it would be illegal to work unless she had a permit of some kind, or she got a gig or small job on Craigslist. I told her babysitting may be a perfect position, as she is older. But she told me a horribly funny story about hurting her baby nephew, but not really, just accidently scraping his head with her watch, and her sister in law getting really angry. But really, it wasn’t such a big deal. So now, Jia says she never wants to take care of a child ever again.
