For my final class observation I went to Anisa's Speaking class. The class was working on timed speeches in preparation for the TEFL exam. It was a higher level class which allowed Anisa to give more challenging topics and for the students to elaborate more on their ideas. She also gave them a variety of options so that they could choose two out of the four topics to speak on. This was greatly helpful to the students because they could pick the ones that they were more comfortable with. Anisa asked the class to work in pairs to develop their ideas and then have their partners time their speeches. This was all a prep activity for the recorded speeches they would later do in the computer lab. I thought this was a great way to get the class into the right mindset before setting them up to record. She went over the rules of the timed speeches, gave them possible topics, and allowed them to think through preparing and giving speeches. Additionally she helped them elaborate on ideas when they were working in pairs asking why or how questions to use their original statements as jumping points for a longer speech. She also gave them useful terms and phrases 'I belive that...' or 'One reason for that would be...' She also was very good at giving the students the time to come up with correct answers before she jumped in and gave them the correct conjugation or phrasing. The class finished up by having individual recordings in the computer lab. She continued to make sure that the students were on task while they recorded and went around asking if anyone needed help saving speeches or had any questions.
