Jackie TP10
But! Jia got through this, and we created her presentation. I was extremely tired at the end of this tutoring session, as it was close to 11pm and I had gotten to school at 9am. But, we persisted and practiced her presentation about five times until she remembered how exactly to click the presentation and it would help her remember what to say. So eventually, we covered the definition of advertising, along with some questions she could ask the audience. For example, "do you know what advertising is?" This was sort of a TEFL-learned skill I passed onto Jia, but in a speaking class it would be wise for her to get the class opinion or class definition of her topic so she could explain more or less about certain things. So, we talked about if they answered the questions in a certain way, she would use supplementary information on the slide to talk about more in depth, or not, because it had been covered, so she would simply agree and move onto the next. We then talked about types of advertising--like, billboards or media. This inherently led into the meaning of advertisements--for example, target audience and intentions. The analyzing of the ads let Jia use a lot of vocabulary she already knew but couldn't exactly get into conversation very easily because she didn't know a lot of connector words. So, I helped her with that so she could talk about the psychological effects of, say, cosmetics ads. Overall, Jia did wonderful on her presentation, especially after memorizing and practicing it many times for speaking mistakes. It was very interesting to see how a foreign student would design a presentation for a teacher--as one day I will have them doing this for me!
