Whitney CP-5

June 27:

I had lofty plans of taking Jongouk to Lake Ella today and enjoying some sunshine--but an afternoon thunderstorm quickly foiled that idea. Instead, we took refuge in Red Eye, a coffee/tea shop on Thomasville. Apparently, I was wrong in remembering that Jongouk and I had learned each other's ages--he was pretty surprised to learn that I'm 24, and I told him that I was too! I guess I just calculated his age from his background story (2 years in college followed by 2 years in the military), but I guess he never actually told me. It's funny how we can figure certain facts out without ever being specifically told--and especially how we can assume we've told someone something, when in fact, we haven't. Jongouk then informed me that in Korea, he is 24. You see, a newborn baby is automatically considered a 1-year old. Then, instead of turning another year older on their birthday, they will be 2 years old on the next (upcoming) new year! Birthdays are still celebrated, but you don't actually "age" another year until the new year (according to the Korean calendar, that is).

So, though Jongouk and I are technically 2 years a part, we are, in our respective countries, the same age :)
