So post class filming, I went out with my conversation partner Cloris and the other students that had so willingly helped me out with my video to get MoMo's Pizza. I was excited to chat with them and that we had enough people to order a large pizza, it literally took up the whole table! So Cloris, Jocelyn, Alonso, Abdullah and I headed over to Tennessee St. and upon entering Momo's there was a hilarious discussion about what the name really was...the neon sign formation lends itself to the name 'Mama's' or maybe 'Mamo's' haha. So we ordered and grabbed a seat outside. They were telling me how CIES is going to go on a trip to the caverns and about recent vacations to Orlando and other spots around FL. We talked about classes at CIES too and I joked about Alonso being a 'trouble-maker.' Cloris asked what class had to do with 'travel' so we took a second and went over the difference between 'trouble' and 'travel'. They do sound quite similar mid-sentance, and I suppose could be one and the same for some people's trips haha. A few times we got caught up speaking spanish, but Adbullah would quickly comment in Arabic to remind up that he had no idea what we were saying in Spanish.
The pizza arrived and after not even finishing half of it we hung out for a while and talked about the Tallahassee dating/club scene. I thought I had bad luck on Tennessee street with running into crazy kids, but some of the stories from Jocelyn and Cloris definitely topped mine. They both seemed pretty shocked at how forward/bold guys (mostly intoxicated ones I suppose) are here in the states. It's very true though, in Spain at least, no one there dances like the kids on the strip, unless they have an intention other than just dancing. Although you can definitely find a calmer crowd in Tallahassee as well, just not so close to the college side of town. So after a number of funny nightlife tales we headed home. I had a blast getting to know everyone better and even made plans to go out with Jocelyn today.
It always surprising to learn that words you never thought sounded similar--can sound more alike to someone from another language. I've definitely encountered that in my conversations too!
ReplyDeleteNever having been to Spain, it's interesting how even "partying" has different protocols in other cultures....I wonder what they would think of other Tallahassee night-lifes (Midtown, First Friday, etc.)...
