Jackie TP8

Jia and I met at Starbucks as usual, and chatted for awhile before hitting the tutoring. I think speaking with her is almost an extremely effective part of tutoring, because when she mispronounces or incorrectly uses grammar, she asks for me to correct her, and she repeats it several times. This, of course, makes communication slower, but it is effective in her learning to speak at a rapid pace in a correct manner. She was stressed about her last week of classes and about some other issues, so we talked about that before we worked through a project she needed help with. She told me a story about her baby cousin, and taking care of him, and that she was worried her sister in law didn't think she was good enough to take care of him. This stemmed from her asking me if I knew a place where she could work. I told her I wasn't sure unless she had some sort of legal work permit for the United States. Or, I told her she could pick up a gig like babysitting or something else small that could be listed on Craigslist. After talking about such, we talked about her project. She had to make a presentation the following day for speaking class that had to be on a specific topic that was given to her. Her project was "advertising methods." So, I told her it would be wise if we made an outline of what her speech was going to be about in order to make sure we covered all bases. I started by asking her how an outline would be--much like an essay outline--and what she wanted to discuss. We decided on the definition of advertising and it's methods. Then, an overview of some methods--both physical and psychological. Then, from the psychological, we came into analysis of the methods and how they were working. We went to the computer and I began to teach her how to use Powerpoint, because she wanted to design her speech with an easy-access viewpoint for the audience/her class to be able to comprehend everything clearly and have reference while she was talking. We took a break after designing the Powerpoint slides and putting titles from the outline we created.
